IPF clinical trials recruiting in the UK
A factual list of IPF and fibrotic lung disease studies with UK sites as at September 2026. None of them involves rentosertib.
There are IPF and fibrotic lung disease studies open at UK hospitals right now. None of them involves rentosertib, and none ever has. Its Phase 3 trial is running in China only, at 47 centres, and there has never been a UK or European site at any stage of its development.
The route into any clinical trial is through a person’s own ILD team, who know their history, their lung function and whether a study would be safe for them.
What being in a trial actually involves
Trials are not a way of getting an unproven medicine early. About half the people in a placebo-controlled trial receive the dummy treatment, and nobody knows who. Visits are frequent, the tests are more demanding than routine care, and you can leave at any time. In the UK ILD Registry, only 7.5% of people were recruited into a study at the time they first came to a centre.
The list below mixes several kinds of study. Some test a new medicine against a placebo. Some test a familiar medicine given a different way, such as inhaled rather than swallowed. Some test something that is not a medicine at all, such as a breathlessness programme or a change in diet. A Phase 2 study is usually looking for a signal and the right dose in a few hundred people. A Phase 3 study is testing whether that signal holds up in a much larger group, and is the one regulators need.

TIPAL, the large lansoprazole trial, closed to recruitment on 23 June 2026, so it is listed for completeness rather than as an open study. The UK sites for FIBRONEER-ON, the nerandomilast open-label extension, have also closed.
Study status changes week by week. Sites listed as “not yet recruiting” may since have opened or been dropped, and the registry entry is always the more current source.
Where to look for yourself
The NIHR’s Be Part of Research service lists studies across the NHS and lets you search by condition and location. Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis keeps a study finder on its website, though it tends to lag behind the registries.
If a study interests you, the useful next step is to note its registry ID and raise it at your next ILD appointment. Your team can say whether the study is open near you and whether you would be eligible. They cannot enrol you in a study at another hospital without a referral.
